Don Bosco e l’azione educativa, sociale, religiosa della società salesiana da lui fondata nel dicembre 1859 – praticamente alla vigilia dell’unità d’Italia (marzo 1861) – non sono ignoti all’opinione pubblica italiana, ma probabilmente non è molto conosciuta la diffusione che l’Opera salesiana ha avuto nei 150 anni della sua presenza sull’attuale territorio nazionale. Altrettanto si può forse dire della risposta vocazionale che generazioni di giovani Italiani hanno dato alla società salesiana, vuoi per un servizio educativo in patria, vuoi per consacrarsi alla stessa missione all’estero. Eppure i numeri parlano da sé: 386 case entro i confini nazionali, frequentate in vario modo da qualche milione di ragazzi, e 17.538 salesiani italiani (operanti in Italia o in un centinaio di Paesi dei cinque continenti)1. Tutto ciò senza contare gli adulti raggiunti tramite l’azione pastorale delle parrocchie e l’attività editoriale che pure conta un secolo e mezzo di vita. Le rapide informazioni statistiche, che qui si presentano, intendono semplicemente contribuire a colmare questo duplice vuoto di conoscenza a servizio di tutti, compresi gli studiosi di storia civile e di storia religiosa.
Questo studio intende presentare nelle sue linee essenziali l’evoluzione dell’opera salesiana sul piano quantitativo durante i 150 anni dall’Unità di Italia. Indubbiamente, il primo obiettivo sarà quello di descrivere la situazione, cercando di fornire informazioni il più possibile oggettivamente fondate.
Il presente volume, allegato alla Relazione del Rettor Maggiore sul sessennio 1984-1989, si propone di offrire un quadro statistico della presenza salesiana — nelle diverse circoscrizioni giuridiche in cui la Congregazione è articolata — e delle opere e attività animate dai Salesiani e dai loro collaboratori. Nello specifico analizza i seguenti Paesi: America; Africa, Asia, Europa, Oceania.

In the wake of Renaissance humanism, St Francis de Sales developed a pastoral rather than theoretical program of education and integral formation of the person. Every human being is called to perfect themself in all their dimensions as an individual: the bodily senses, the passions and affections of the soul, the spiritual faculties of memory and intellect, and especially the heart, the seat of the will and freedom.
As someone immersed in society, St Francis de Sales shows himself to be attentive to the promotion of the dignity of each individual be it in the family, in social relationships, at work, in leisure time or in the service of country. Finally, St Francis de Sales cannot think of the person without an openness to transcendence. His program is original in this area too: he has a positive image of a God who attracts the human being while respecting our freedom; the devotion he promotes is a “civil devotion”; moreover, the love of God is to be lived in daily life, while love of one’s neighbour is characterised by “gentleness”, the flower of charity. St Francis de Sales program is an antidote against a one-dimensional formation that neglects the multiple resources of human nature

Dans la deuxième partie on a voulu retracer le parcours salésien de don Bosco, c’est-à-dire la manière dont la figure de François de Sales s’est imposée progressivement à l’éducateur turinois. Enfin on s’est efforcé d’identifier un certain nombre de traits présents dans la figure de don Bosco qui renvoient de façon certaine à son modèle.
