John Dickson – An introduction to Don Rua’s letters to England

Michael Rua (1837-1910) was a pupil, then the lifetime collaborator and finally, the first successor of St. John Bosco as Rector Major of the Salesian Society (1888-1910). During his Rectorate the Salesians grew from 1030 members in 64 houses to 4420 confreres scattered across the globe. Don Rua’s letters to England offer the reader a glimpse of the character of their writer and of the pastoral care he took of a small group of relatively insignificant Salesians in what was very often the inhospitable atmosphere of the British empire at the height of its power.

Arthur Lenti – Politics of the “Our Father” and the holy father: Don Bosco’s mediation in Church-State affairs

Fr. Arthur J. Lenti tells the story of Don Bosco’ s efforts to mediate between the Holy See and the Italian government during the tense years of Italian unification. Of special importance was the appointment of bishops. After offering background on the historical events leading to the estrangement between the Church and state in Italy, the author goes to the sources in an effort to answer the question why someone so politically unimportant as Don Bosco, should become involved in a capacity of “negotiator.”

Giovanni Bosco – Guidelines for running salesian houses (1863-1887)

The origin of this authoritative document, the Confidential Reminders, is a letter written to Fr Michael Rua whom Don Bosco called on to take up the running of the first Salesian house outside Turin in autumn 1863: the college or junior seminary of St Charles in Mirabello Monferrato. In a letter sent to the young Rector/Director, Don Bosco wanted to pass on pedagogical and spiritual guidelines which had already been in practice at Valdocco. These were to also characterise the apostolic and educational work in the new foundation.

Salesian Youth Ministry Department – Salesian youth ministry animation structures

The animation and coordination of pastoral work are carried out on different levels: local,  provincial, interprovincial and international. We are  suggesting a practical method for drawing up the SEPP. Continue reading “Salesian Youth Ministry Department – Salesian youth ministry animation structures”

Salesian Youth Ministry Department – Activities and works of salesian youth ministry

We propose some reflections on the most important features of the works and services in which one carries out the Salesian Youth Ministry outlined in the Educative and Pastoral  Project. First of all there are the most organised and traditional works: the Oratory-Youth  Centre, School and Vocational Training Centre, the Salesian presence in Higher Education, the parish and sanctuary entrusted to the Salesians, and the works and the social services for  youth-at-risk. Then there are other works and services through which we reach out to young  people and respond to the new challenges they pose. Many of these new educational and  pastoral presences among young people can be carried out also in the traditional services; it would be a sign of the effort at their renewal and pastoral advancement.
