L ’assistenza è il centro dell’educazione salesiana, e comprendere l ’assistenza vuol dire comprendere il Sistema Preventivo di D. Bosco. L ’assistenza, diciamolo pure, non è di moda nell’educazione odierna, dove non si parla che di autoformazione, autogoverno, e dove i sistemi dominanti sono ispirati ad un clima di assoluta libertà e indipendenza.

Le 15 mai 1891, Leon XIII publiait l ’encyclique Rerum Novarum, premier document fondamental de l ’Eglise sur la condition ouvrière. Quelques mois plus tard, le 8 décembre 1891, à la demande de l’évèque de Liège, V.-J. Doutreloux, les Salésiens de Don Bosco ouvraient leur première maison en Belgique. Il y a plus qu’une coincidence entre ces deux événements.

O “Nova Vida” é um programa municipal que funciona há 28 anos na cidade de Macaé (estado do Rio de Janeiro – Brasil) e trabalha com jovens entre 14 e 18 anos. Os jovens do programa passam um turno do dia trabalhando numa secretaria municipal e no outro turno frequentam a escola. Eles recebem meio salário mínimo (atualmente R$ 469,00, aproximadamente 115,00 euros – valores de dezembro de 2017). Esta é uma oportunidade para aprender a trabalhar, por conseguinte são incluídos socialmente. “One and not the last study by Don Bosco this year,” writes J. B. Lemoyne referring to 1863 “was the foundation of the college at Mirabello. He had written up its regulations, using the ones at the Oratory as a basis, specifying all the duties of individual superiors and of the pupils, changing what might not be appropriate for the nature of this Institute.” These “regulations,” that remained simply handwritten for many years, according to what we have from Lemoyne, “had to be the founding statute for all the other Houses that would be opened over time. This meant they were given much importance.”

The Programme—also called Regulations—of the school in Mornese was printed by Don Bosco at the Oratory Press like all the other Regulations for Salesian houses. The text copies many of the items in use at colleges he founded.
Don Bosco’s biographer, Father John Baptist Lemoyne, notes that most of the boys who attended Don Bosco’s evening classes were hard-working young apprentices or youths who worked wherever they could find a job.
