John Dickson – An introduction to Don Rua’s letters to England
Michael Rua (1837-1910) was a pupil, then the lifetime collaborator and finally, the first successor of St. John Bosco as Rector Major of the Salesian Society (1888-1910). During his Rectorate the Salesians grew from 1030 members in 64 houses to 4420 confreres scattered across the globe. Don Rua’s letters to England offer the reader a glimpse of the character of their writer and of the pastoral care he took of a small group of relatively insignificant Salesians in what was very often the inhospitable atmosphere of the British empire at the height of its power.

Don Bosco è Venerabile! Questa è la fausta novella che da tanti anni si sospirava e che finalmente sull’ali del telegrafo giunse la sera del 24 Luglio. Questo è il felice annunzio che ripetuto in tutte le lingue per mezzo dei giornali ha rallegrato il cuore di innumerevoli amici ed ammiratori di D. Bosco. Per quanto remota possa essere la dimora di molti Missionari, anche in quegli sterminati deserti dell’America li raggiunse la notizia di questo giocondissimo avvenimento. Tuttavia il Rettor Maggiore non volle dare ufficiale comunicazione prima di poter leggere il Decreto della Sacra Congregazione dei Riti e baciare con trasporto di gioia la firma dell’Augusto Pontefice Pio X che si degnò confermare il voto. E questa ineffabile consolazione mi fu concessa in questi ultimi giorni, quando il Procuratore Generale, D. Michele Rua – Studi – Vocazioni.
In questa lettera vengono raccontate le visite delle case salesiane del Rettor Maggiore. Egli attraversò tutta la Francia, per recarsi a visitare le varie case delle Isole Britanniche, passò per le case del Portogallo, ed in gran parte di quelle della Spagna e tornato a Torino, dopo essersi fermato per un breve periodo, riprese il viaggio per le case dell’Italia Meridionale, della Sicilia, della Calabria e delle Puglie.
