John Roche – Salesian evangelization. At the threshold of the bicentennial of Don Bosco’s birth – Part 2

MaryJo Leddy explained that in her act of accompaniment with many of the young adults assisting in her ministry to the refugees, she found herself taking a lead from them. She has found a voice of conscience and concern in this generation. She is touched by their thirst and hunger for holiness and authenticity.

Francis J. Moloney – The salesian charism and the good shepherd motif

Fr. Moloney offers an historical look at how the image of the Good Shepherd came to be connected with the person of Don Bosco and the Salesian charism, and how this connection is relatively new.

He then presents an interesting insight on the Good Shepherd image on the Salesian cross received by those who take their perpetual vows within the Congregation.

For the beginning of our centennial celebration we are gathered together here as a family in the place where the Salesians established their first presence in the United States of America. When we compare our present- day situation with that at the moment of our arrival we find much for which we must be grateful to God.

Michele Rua – Lo spirito di D. Bosco – Vocazioni.

Lo zelo fa concepire a D. Bosco il desiderio di fornire ad ogni parrocchia abili cantori. Egli gusta ed ama ardentemente la musica, eppure ha una predilezione pel canto gregoriano. Mi è dolce ricordare i loro sforzi, coronati da splendidi risultati, per insegnare colla musica sacra il canto prettamente ecclesiastico, sia in Italia come in Francia. Don Michele Rua si compiace nel pensiero che i Salesiani furono considerati da vari Vescovi e ragguardevoli personaggi quali strumenti per rialzare il decoro delle sacre funzioni, e furono sempre chiamati a cantare nelle più grandi solennità. Lo zelo dei maestri in varie case si comunicò agli alunni, che presero a coltivare il canto gregoriano con non minor gusto ed impegno che la musica.
