And so the main object of our reflections will be the figure of Don Bosco, a figure we shall try to make contact with, not so much to understand his external actions which we all know about already, but rather to understand the conditions, the motivations, the spirit which led him to make specific choices, to work in a specific way, to write about particular matters, to reach a particular form of holiness which is specifically his own, different in some ways from that of other saints.

Henri Bouquier – Le pas dans les pas de Don Bosco ou Spiritualité Salesiénne

Le Salésien, disciple de Don Bosco, devra se sanctifier comme lui dont la manière de sainteté a été authentifiée, canonisée, si l’on peut dire, par l’autorité infaillible de l’Eglise.

En d’autres termes, la « perfection de’ l’Evangile », point de départ de toute sainteté, dans son application pratique au problème particulier de l’éducation, nous est parvenue à. travers un saint éducateur, Don Bosco, qui, de ce fait, se présente à tous comme le modèle achevé, mieux que cela comme le type idéal et le chef-d’œuvre par excellence à reproduire.

Francis Desramaut – “Contemporary spirituality of the salesian family” in “Journal of Salesian Studies”

A noted Salesian scholar and author, Fr. Desramaut has recently undertaken a work of major proportions, a dictionary of Salesian spirituality. The title of the work is: Les cent mots-clefs de la spiritualite salesienne (One Hundred Keywords in Salesian Spirituality). It is being published in installments in Cahiers Salesiens, the journal of the Center of Salesian Studies in Lyons (France), over which Fr. Desramaut presides. The first installment of the work (containing entries from A to C) is prefaced by an introductory essay on Salesian spirituality. This is the essay which is given here in English as meticulously translated by Fr. Arthur J. Lenti.
