Al momento in cui l’opera salesiana negli Stati Uniti ebbe inizio nel marzo 1897 con l’arrivo di un drappello di quattro salesiani a San Francisco in California, chiamati dall’arcivescovo mons. William Patrick Riordan per provvedere alla cura pastorale degli immigrati italiani sparsi della città, erano già trascorsi ben 27 anni dalla prima proposta pervenuta a don Bosco di una fondazione salesiana da parte di un vescovo di una diocesi americana ed altre erano pervenute

Michael Mendl – “Don Michele Rua e il lavoro salesiano nell’Est degli Stati Uniti, 1898-1910”, in “Don Michele Rua primo successore di Don Bosco. Tratti di personalità, governo e opere (1888-1910)”.

Durante il rettorato di don Michele Rua, i figli e le figlie di don Bosco, richiesti da tempo da vari vescovi, giunsero finalmente negli Stati Uniti d’America. Vari articoli sul “Journal of Salesian Studies” e “Ricerche Storiche Salesiane”  hanno presentato alcuni dei primi inizi andati a vuoto, così come arrivi effettuati e i primi difficili anni dei salesiani nella California e a New York. This paper, which investigates the first thirty years of the history of the Thai FMA Province of “St Mary Mazzarello” through the lived experience of is members from the first batch of missionaries who came to Siam in 1931 to the 14th group in 1961, takes on added significance in the context of the celebration of the 75 years of FMA presence in Thailand two years ago and our present project of completing the chronicles of the Province.

The phase of implantation, expansion and initial consolidation of Salesian presence in India may be considered to be the period from 1906 to 1951/52, i.e. from the arrival of Salesians until the establishment of the two provinces of the North and the South. This paper proposes to study the ideals that led the Salesians during this period, the challenges they faced, their response to these challenges and the results they attained.

This article would like to present a general view of the political situation of China in the period of 1920-30. Even though China has succeeded in establishing a republic through the revolution, she was still suffering from the civil wars and foreign powers invasion. It greatly affected the daily life of the people, and also, giving a great hindrance for Salesians, along with other missionaries, in their evangelization and educational endeavors. How the Salesian Charism has been implanted and taken root in a country is indeed a very interesting and at the same time a very challenging theme. In the case of Viet Nam the planting and the growing processes seem to be neatly cut, surrounded by the turbulent events of the history of modern Viet Nam.

La fundación de las Hijas de María Auxiliadora en Colombia se realizó en 1897 por una gestión expresa da don Evasio Rabagliati para que se dedicaran a la educación, y junto con los SDB, se encargaran de la misión en el Lazareto de Contratación. Fue don Rabagliati el gran propulsor del trabajo en los Lazaretos en Colombia. On 6 February l922,Pius XI (1939) ascended the Papal throne: he would become known as a “Pope of the Missions” (as was his predecessor, Benedict XV). Two months later, on 24 April, Fr. Filippo Rinaldi ( 5 December 1931) was elected Rector Major: his ten years in office would be recalled for the great re-launching of the Salesian missionary movement. After a rapid glance at the “missionary policy” of the Papacy during the same period, we shall concentrate on that.
