Capitolo Generale XXVIII Salesiani di Don Bosco – “What kind of Salesians for the youth of today?”. Post-chapter reflection

The document that now reaches all confreres through this publication is subtitled “Post-Chapter reflection” and not “Chapter documents”, as has customarily been the case in the past. This is because the Chapter Assembly did not arrive at the point of final approval of the text by vote. Only a few Chapter deliberations, especially those of a legal nature, saw the light of day during the first four weeks of our work.

Roger Burggraeve – On the way to sustainable love. Ethical Stepping Stones for a Christian and Salesian Relational and Sexual Education of Growth in a Pluralist Society

In my essay I would like to present the stepping-stones for a Christian-inspired and Salesian relational and sexual ethics of growth in educational work. With this, I take as fact Don Bosco’s idea of assistance, which in this Salesian Forum is evoked as an educative attitude and method of ‘presence’.

Wim Collin – The ‘educational presence’ in the biographies of young people written by Don Bosco. The Salesian educator present as a help in the vocational realization

Analysing the educational presence, like presented by Don Bosco in the biographies, means that we have to analyse these documents to see how he in a narrative way describes his own role in the lives of these youngsters. Even if he doesn’t mention himself by his own name, sometimes we find, certainly in the lives of Savio, Magone and Besucco, direct and indirect references to himself.

Carlo Loots – The theory of presence of Andries Baart as a source of inspiration for education and assistance Don Bosco as discussion partner / companion

A great advocate of the theory of presence is Andries Baart, professor at the Catholic Theological University in Utrecht. In the nineties, he did very detailed research among pastoral workers in poverty areas of a big city. He was interested in the question how the loving and attentive closeness of pastors ‘without a desk, a room or a consultation hour’, functions with people in disadvantaged neighbourhoods.

Jos Biesmans,Rik Biesmans – The Magna Carta of the Salesian Educational System, Sussidio

Rik Biesmans – The Magna Carta of the Salesian Educational System, vol. 1

The text now available offers the English translation of the first volume of a Dutch study consisting of two volumes. It is entitled: The Magna Carta of the Salesian Educational System. This first volume contains 4 chapters:

  1. The first chapter should acquaint readers with certain circumstances in the extensive and multifaceted activities in the Valdocco Oratory in the years 1880-1884.
  2. The second chapter offers an insight into how the first section of the extended or ’combined version’ (manuscript D) may have been constructed. This section of the larger chapter, a sort of circular letter, was meant for the Salesians in Valdocco.
  3. The longer third chapter consists of the discussion of the content of the “circular letter” (manuscripts C and D).
  4. The short fourth chapter draws attention to the main pedagogical and pastoral components.

Rik Biesmans – The Magna Carta of the Salesian Educational System, vol. 2

The original Dutch study of “The Magna Carta of the Salesian Education” consists of two volumes. The first volume contains comments on the first part of manuscript D (Ms. D) with the text for the teachers and assistants at Valdocco. Some years later Fr. Gaston Deneve, SDB finished the second volume, commenting on the second part of Ms. D with almost the complete letter sent From Rome on 10 May 1884 to the boys at the Oratory in Valdocco, and offering further considerations concerning both parts. Julian Fox and Emmanuel Camilleri kindly reviewed and corrected this translation.

To make the comparison with the original Italian texts easier we have prepared an Auxiliary or Supplementary Booklet consisting of six columns. This was realized by Jos Biesmans, SDB and Eugeen Vanhoof, a committed cooperator. In the second volume of the Study we have indicated the pages concerned between brackets.
