Di queste fonti vengono analizzati gli articoli relativi alla presenza di Maria nella vita e nella spiritualità dell’Istituto.

Don Bosco, a tireless apostle of Marian devotion, emphasised the role of the Blessed Virgin for salvation of the individual in the Companion of Youth: she is the mediatrix of graces, defence against the assaults of evil, support in living a Christian life and on the way to holiness. These are things he draws from St Alphonsus Liguori: true devotion expressed through a life of virtue above all guarantees the most powerful patronage one could have in life and in death.

Relationships between Don Bosco and Archbishop Gastaldi went through two different stages, one of great understanding and cooperation, and another of notable difficulties and conflicts. The watershed could be considered to be Gastaldi’s transferral from the Episcopal See of Saluzzo to being Archbishop of Turin in 1871.

In the early 1870s, when the Salesian Society was going through a happy time of expansion beyond the borders of Piedmont, thanks also to the many vocations flowing in, Don Bosco, with a group of Daughters of Mary Immaculate at Mornese who were gathered around Mary Domenica Mazzarello (1837-1881), gave life to the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians. In a very short time it was approved by the Diocesan Ordinary and aggregated to the Salesian society, then spread throughout Italy and overseas. We publish here five documents on this women’s foundation.

When he had built the church of Mary Help of Christians at Valdocco in Turin in 1868, Don Bosco had it consecrated with an entire cycle of celebrations made available for the public domain through an appropriate booklet. Then he set out to make it an attractive centre for prayers, thanks and donations through a second larger book. Still not satisfied he sought to give stability to general devotion to Mary under the title of Mary Help of Christians through a lay association which bore that name.

The Central Salesian Archive contains numerous eyewitness reports of Don Bosco’s words and deeds, particularly in the form of chronicles and memoirs. I drew heavily on these documents for previous articles which saw the light of day in the pages of this Journal. I shall do the same for the present article.
L’esigenza di avere uno stemma proprio emerge in seguito alla “separazione” dell’Istituto dalla Società Salesiana. Infatti, in una delle sedute del Consiglio generale in data 26 luglio 1905 si prende in considerazione il fatto, e si stabilisce di farlo preparare per poi sottoporlo all’approvazione del Capitolo generale. Nel verbale dell’adunanza si legge: “Si è determinato di presentare al Capitolo Generale un timbro o bollo da adottarsi per tutta la Congregazione”.
Nei verbali del Capitolo generale successivo, tuttavia, non si trova nulla al riguardo.
Si costata però che dal 1907 le pratiche d’ufficio dell’Istituto venivano timbrate con lo stemma che si è conservato fino ad oggi.

Il Rettor Maggiore don Filippo Rinaldi scrive alla Madre Generale e a tutte le FMA, in occasione della festa di Maria Ausiliatrice nell’anno del giubileo d’oro della fondazione dell’Istituto delle FMA (1922). Ripercorre brevemente il cammino realizzato da don Bosco per la fondazione dell’Istituto e risalta come in quest’opera egli sia stato guidato da Dio.
Sottolinea l’ispirazione di don Bosco di voler fondare un Istituto che fosse il “monumento della sua riconoscenza” a Maria Ausiliatrice.
Tornò dolce il vedere che il Congresso trasse a Torino il fior fiore dei Cooperatori e delle pie Cooperatrici! Essi vennero da lontani paesi, portati unicamente dal desiderio di stringere sempre più i vincoli di carità che li uniscono all’umile Società Salesiana, sempre meglio intendersi sul modo di aiutare le Opere che si hanno tra mano e renderle ognor più feconde per la salvezza delle anime. Onorarono il Congresso collo splendore della loro altissima dignità tre Eminentissimi Cardinali di S. Chiesa e oltre a trenta Eccellentissimi Arcivescovi e Vescovi, i quali accesero tutti i cuori d’un santo entusiasmo colla loro autorevole ed eloquentissima parola.
