L’ Epistolario di don Francesco Bodrato, già pubblicato nel 1988, ha aperto le edizioni critiche della sezione Missioni dell’istituto Storico Salesiano. È stata una scelta intenzionale: è apparso infatti ovvio che su altri salesiani più rappresentativi dovesse prevalere l’Epistolario di chi, nella breve ma intensa presenza «americana» (1876-1880), ha svolto una funzione significativa in un memorabile momento della storia della Società Salesiana. El Epistolario de don Francesco Bodratto abre el apartado « ediciones críticas » de la sección-misiones del Instituto Histórico Salesiano. Ha sido una opción querida. Aún reconociendo que tal primacía correspondería a otros salesianos más representativos que él en el alborear misionero —card. Cagliero, mons. Lasagna, mons. Costamagna, mons. Fagnano… —, sin embargo el escaso lustro transcurrido por don Bodratto en tierra argentina — fácilmente abarcable — y la coyuntura histórica en el que lo transcurre, le otorgan el honor de abrir brecha en la publicación de fuentes misioneras. To write this paper, I used a great part of the materials gathered by the deceased Fr. Alfonso Crevacore in the “Cimatti Museum” of Tokyo (CMT), situated in the Salesian Seminary of Chofu. It deals specially with the mail correspondence. The originals are found according to the container, or in the Vatican Archives, or in the Central Salesian Archives of Rome (ASC) or in the archive of the China Province in Hong Kong or in the said Cimatti Museum. Fr. Mario Rassiga’s manuscript “Breve cenno storico dell’opera salesiana in Cina” (vol. II, chapter XCIX, pp. 125-136), which reported the correspondence between the Holy See and the Superiors in Turin before the foundation of the Salesian work in Japan. One should note that the actual Japanese Province, up to I January 1928, was part of the Visitatoria of China, of which the superior was Fr. Ignazio Canazei. The paper sheds light on the contribution of the FMA to the advance of the Salesian spirit in China through their availability, sacrifice, indomitable courage in facing severe challenges and above all their fidelity to the spirit of “Da mihi animas, cetera tolle” by offering to youth and the needy services in keeping with the charism of the institute and in response to the needs of the place and time.
The Sisters Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (SIHM) would like to acknowledge the invitation to contribute to the Seminar of EAO on “Implantation of the Salesian Charism in the Region: Ideals, Challenges, Answers and Results”. Being a member of the Salesian Family, we too are eager to study and know more about this precious gift.
The first nine Salesian missionaries arrived in Japan on 8 February 1926 under the leadership of Fr Vincenzo Cimatti. They were entrusted with the two provinces of Miyazaki and Oita, far away from the big cities, where they succeeded the missionaries of the Foreign Missions of Paris (MEP).
The phase of implantation, expansion and initial consolidation of Salesian presence in India may be considered to be the period from 1906 to 1951/52, i.e. from the arrival of Salesians until the establishment of the two provinces of the North and the South. This paper proposes to study the ideals that led the Salesians during this period, the challenges they faced, their response to these challenges and the results they attained.
How the Salesian Charism has been implanted and taken root in a country is indeed a very interesting and at the same time a very challenging theme. In the case of Viet Nam the planting and the growing processes seem to be neatly cut, surrounded by the turbulent events of the history of modern Viet Nam.
On 6 February l922,Pius XI (1939) ascended the Papal throne: he would become known as a “Pope of the Missions” (as was his predecessor, Benedict XV). Two months later, on 24 April, Fr. Filippo Rinaldi ( 5 December 1931) was elected Rector Major: his ten years in office would be recalled for the great re-launching of the Salesian missionary movement.
