The letter begins with warm greetings and a sense of unity among the recipients, emphasizing the importance of carrying out Jesus’ missionary program. It highlights Don Bosco’s missionary vision and the early missions of the Salesian Congregation. The focus then shifts to discussing the American South-Cone Region, detailing its composition and historical connections among its member countries. On June 23rd of last year, our Rector Major, Fr. Egidio Vigano, the 7th successor of Don Bosco, passed away and returned to God. His peaceful passing occurred at the Generalate, where he was attended by his brothers Frs. Angelo and Francesco, and surrounded by the prayers and affection of fellow confreres and sisters, as well as the esteem of many friends. The Holy Father personally conveyed words of comfort and his blessing to Fr. Vigano the day before his passing.
The funeral services served as a poignant tribute to Fr. Vigano, highlighting the gratitude of confreres and members of the Salesian Family for his unwavering guidance and leadership. They underscored his esteemed reputation in both civil and ecclesiastical circles, attributed to his theological acumen and collaborative spirit. The Rector Major is drafting this letter on the Feast of Pentecost, extending wishes for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in their hearts, fostering interior growth. This auspicious occasion marks the commencement of the special Marian Year proclaimed by the Holy Father in his encyclical letter “Redemptoris Mater” (RM), which will span until the Solemnity of the Assumption of Our Lady in 1988. The Pope envisions that Mary’s fullness of grace, as the one who believed, should illuminate and guide the Church’s faith as it journeys through the final years of the twentieth century. Charles N. Bransom, Jr. has graciously offered his study of Salesian Bishops for our publication. This study of 196 Salesian bishops stands as a historical record of Salesian presence in the hierarchical Church.
This study does not go into the long process that led to Don Bosco’s beatification, which took place on June 2, 1929. The topic concerns one small aspect: the sworn testimony of eyewitnesses concerning his life of “faith.”
