Rik Biesmans – The Magna Carta of the Salesian Educational System, vol. 2

The original Dutch study of “The Magna Carta of the Salesian Education” consists of two volumes. The first volume contains comments on the first part of manuscript D (Ms. D) with the text for the teachers and assistants at Valdocco. Some years later Fr. Gaston Deneve, SDB finished the second volume, commenting on the second part of Ms. D with almost the complete letter sent From Rome on 10 May 1884 to the boys at the Oratory in Valdocco, and offering further considerations concerning both parts. Julian Fox and Emmanuel Camilleri kindly reviewed and corrected this translation.

To make the comparison with the original Italian texts easier we have prepared an Auxiliary or Supplementary Booklet consisting of six columns. This was realized by Jos Biesmans, SDB and Eugeen Vanhoof, a committed cooperator. In the second volume of the Study we have indicated the pages concerned between brackets. This book satisfies a real need describing as it does the growth of Don Bosco’s work with historical accuracy and in pleasant style.

Going back one hundred and fifty years, the Salesian story is one of continuous growth. There was no need therefore to divide it into different periods. Because Don Bosco’s childhood was the foundation of his achievement, it seems only natural to begin with his birth in 1815 and to conclude with the Salesian General Chapter in 1965. En quoi don Bosco est-il salésien ? À cette question les réponses ont été variées selon les auteurs dont les points de vue sont exposés dans la première partie. Dans la deuxième partie on a voulu retracer le parcours salésien de don Bosco, c’est-à-dire la manière dont la figure de François de Sales s’est imposée progressivement à l’éducateur turinois. Enfin on s’est efforcé d’identifier un certain nombre de traits présents dans la figure de don Bosco qui renvoient de façon certaine à son modèle. Il documento del CG XVIII è breve perché questo Capitolo, straordinario per il poco tempo trascorso dal precedente, è stato eminentemente di verifica e di rilancio di quanto il CGXVII ci aveva proposto.

Si è fatto il punto sul nostro modo di essere e di lavorare nella Chiesa a servizio delle giovani, specialmente le più povere, con una sempre più viva collaborazione di tutta la comunità educante animata dallo spirito salesiano.
