Il libro contiene cenni storici riguardanti la vita del chierico Luigi Comello, scritti da Giovanni Bosco, suo “collega”. Lo scritto era indirizzato ai seminaristi di Chieri, luogo in cui lo stesso Comollo visse, affinché potesse servire loro come modello.
Analysing the educational presence, like presented by Don Bosco in the biographies, means that we have to analyse these documents to see how he in a narrative way describes his own role in the lives of these youngsters. Even if he doesn’t mention himself by his own name, sometimes we find, certainly in the lives of Savio, Magone and Besucco, direct and indirect references to himself.
Questa pubblicazione è andata incontro a un desiderio di molti. Nelle biografie di S. Giovanni Bosco si faceva menzione e si facevano anche citazioni di certe sue Memorie, le quali i lettori non riuscivano a comprendere che cosa fossero nè perchè le circondasse quasi un’ombra di mistero. La curiosità si sentiva stuzzicata, e non si può negare che fosse una curiosità legittima. Questa ora è stata pienamente soddisfatta.

Chi, informato ed ammirato della prodigiosa memoria di San Giovanni Bosco, si metta a leggere le sue memorie autobiografiche, stese per espresso comando di Pio IX tra il 1873 ed il 1875, corre rischio di rimanere alquanto deluso.
Si narra che, un giorno dell’inizio del secolo, alla stazione di Milano un salesiano fu avvicinato da un Reverendo distinto, che gli chiese: — Quand’è che voi Salesiani scriverete una vita di D. Bosco ? — E alla risposta « che c’era già, che l’aveva scritta D. Lemoyne e che ne esistevano anche altre », il Reverendo aveva insistito: — No, no. Una vita.

The Central Salesian Archive contains numerous eyewitness reports of Don Bosco’s words and deeds, particularly in the form of chronicles and memoirs. I drew heavily on these documents for previous articles which saw the light of day in the pages of this Journal. I shall do the same for the present article.
The present essay has a rather modest aim. Steering clear of the complexities of a biographical reconstruction, it will simply describe Don Rosco’s last years, including his last illness and death, with focus on the person, and with emphasis on words and attitudes.
Included in the copious documentation that comprises the chronicles and annals of the early history of the Salesian Society in the Salesian archives in Rome, there is a treasure trove of diaries, journals, memoirs, and daybooks which chart the ebb and flow of the early years of the Oratory of Saint Francis of Sales.
