John Dickson – “War, racism and immobility the social impact of the early salesian work in Cape Town”, in “L’Opera Salesiana dal 1880 al 1922. Esperienze particolari in Europa, Africa, Asia”.

At the first official Conference of the Catholic Bishops and Mission Superiors of Southern Africa in December 1895 it was announced that Bishop Leonard had already agreed with the Salesians of Turin (Don Bosco) to open a house at Cape Town for the recovery of poor boys of an older age. This proved to be somewhat premature because the Salesians did not in fact arrive till the following December but the announcement by this leading figure in South African Catholic history and the subsequent misunderstandings and controversy with him were to mark the Salesian work in Cape Town for the next 50 years. The purpose of this study is to examine how far the Salesians made a significant social impact in Cape Town and to what extent they were actually absorbed by the prevailing culture.

Alla prima Conferenza ufficiale dei Vescovi Cattolici e Superiori della Missione in Africa Meridionale nel dicembre 1895 fu annunciato che Mons. Leonard aveva già concordato con i Salesiani di Torino (Don Bosco) di aprire una casa a Cape Town per il ricovero di ragazzi poveri di un’età avanzata. Ciò si rivelò alquanto prematuro perché i Salesiani non arrivarono infatti fino al dicembre successivo, ma l’annuncio di questo personaggio di spicco della storia cattolica sudafricana e le successive incomprensioni e polemiche con lui segnarono l’opera salesiana a Cape Town per i successivi 50 anni. Lo scopo di questo studio è quello di esaminare fino a che punto i Salesiani abbiano avuto un impatto sociale significativo a Cape Town e in che misura siano stati effettivamente assorbiti dalla cultura prevalente.
