L’idea di “accompagnamento ” nella Sacra Scrittura è presente ovunque. È presente nella chiamata ad esistere, è presente nella chiamata ad un progetto in vista di una missione. Ma questa nozione è sempre legata alla fede di un Dio che parla e interagisce con l’uomo o con
l’intero popolo. Dio si manifesta ad Abramo e, dopo che questi ha riconosciuto colui che Io chiama ad esistere, lo accompagna fino a stabilire un’alleanza in vista di un progetto-missione.
Due eventi di diversa portata agli inizi e verso la fine dell’esperienza educativa di don Bosco illuminano alcune fondamentali valenze della sua proposta «preventiva»: assistenziale, pedagogica, sociale. Il primo risale agli anni ‘50 e viene rievocato da uno dei primi «oratoriani», Giuseppe Brosio (1829-1883)1, che verso il 1880 rilascia una testimonianza su una contestazione avvenuta all’Oratorio intorno agli anni ‘50. Il secondo evento è legato a certe campagne giornalistiche degli anni 1882-83 che lanciano contro don Bosco l’accusa di «politico» o «politicante» occulto. Don Bosco non respinge del tutto l’addebito; anzi, non esita a sottolineare in più occasioni la finalità e la portata sociale e politica della sua scelta «educazionista».
In clima idealistico fu di moda irridere alla metodologia pedagogica e didattica, facilmente scambiata con il «pedagogismo» e il «didattismo». E si dimenticò, forse, che da quando ci fu educazione, essa non potè attuarsi, nel nostro piccolo mondo umano, fatto di umili cose, di brevi gesti, di incerte parole, se non con elementari mezzi di comunicazione, che potevano esprimere realtà grandi, assolute, ma non erano essi stessi nè grandi nè assoluti.

Questa sua ricerca rappresenta un saggio scientificamente valido di riflessione teologico-pastorale, innanzi tutto per la struttura ben articolata dell’intero studio, ed inoltre per il rigore con cui è stato utilizzato il metodo « empirico-critico », proprio della Teologia pastorale. Ha compiuto un’analisi scientificamente vagliata degli attuali orientamenti e modelli di pastorale generale e di pastorale giovanile, adottati soprattutto nelle Chiese locali italiane.

Abstract
Per il figlio Guglielmo, quindicenne, prigioniero e lontano dal suo cuore di madre, la nobildonna catalana Duoda (sec. IX) scrisse un manualetto di vita cristiana, in modo che il giovane potesse trovare in quelle pagine lo specchio nel quale scorgere, al di sopra di ogni possibile dubbio, lo stato di salute della propria anima. Questa preoccupazione materna di guida e di educazione cristiana dei giovani traduce l’esortazione di Paolo a Tito: «Esorta ancora i più giovani a essere assennati, offrendo te stesso come esempio in tutto di buona condotta, con purezza di dottrina, dignità, linguaggio sano e irreprensibile, perché il nostro avversario resti confuso, non avendo nulla di male da dire sul conto nostro» (Tt 2,6-8). A questa tradizione di pedagogia cristiana, fatta di insegnamento e di testimonianza, si richiama il contenuto del presente volume, dedicato all’accompagnamento spirituale dei giovani. La competenza e l’esperienza pastorale dei singoli autori e l’armonica articolazione delle tematiche rendono oltremodo valida e attuale la proposta d’insieme del presente sussidio, che, oltre alle relazioni presentate al convegno del 2-4 gennaio 1998, ampliate e rielaborate per la stampa, ospita anche un’appendice bibliografica con più di duecento titoli sul tema in questione.

In ambito cristiano l’esercizio della “direzione spirituale” è iniziato con la formazione dei monaci ma è divenuta un’istanza centrale per chiunque decida di intraprendere un cammino di crescita spirituale. Anche all’alba del terzo millennio si sente il bisogno di una paternità spirituale: in particolare tra i giovani, i quali vanno in cerca di maestri, di padri e madri nello Spirito per essere aiutati ad affrontare un cammino di fede non illusorio tra i flutti e gli scogli, le nebbie e le confusioni della postmodernità. Questo quaderno presenta una serie di riflessioni sull’accompagnamento in prospettiva salesiana. Sono voci, prospettive ed esperienze diverse, non esaustive certamente, ma animate dall’unica ambizione di stimolare la riflessione e il confronto.
In the wake of Renaissance humanism, St Francis de Sales developed a pastoral rather than theoretical program of education and integral formation of the person. Every human being is called to perfect themself in all their dimensions as an individual: the bodily senses, the passions and affections of the soul, the spiritual faculties of memory and intellect, and especially the heart, the seat of the will and freedom.
As someone immersed in society, St Francis de Sales shows himself to be attentive to the promotion of the dignity of each individual be it in the family, in social relationships, at work, in leisure time or in the service of country. Finally, St Francis de Sales cannot think of the person without an openness to transcendence. His program is original in this area too: he has a positive image of a God who attracts the human being while respecting our freedom; the devotion he promotes is a “civil devotion”; moreover, the love of God is to be lived in daily life, while love of one’s neighbour is characterised by “gentleness”, the flower of charity. St Francis de Sales program is an antidote against a one-dimensional formation that neglects the multiple resources of human nature

Among Saint John Bosco’s early disciples, Paolo Albera (1845-1921) was one who was called upon to articulate and defend the founder’s spirit. Even as a youth, he had been numbered among Don Bosco’s most beloved. He served in a variety of leadership positions from his teenage years until his election as rector major in 1910. Perhaps his most significant role before becoming superior general was that of spiritual director general of the Salesian Society, a post he held from 1892 until 1910. William Patrick Riordan per provvedere alla cura pastorale degli immigrati italiani sparsi della città, erano già trascorsi ben 27 anni dalla prima proposta pervenuta a don Bosco di una fondazione salesiana da parte di un vescovo di una diocesi americana ed altre erano pervenute
