Joseph Boenzi – Da Mihi Animas. Cry of the pastoral heart of Francis de Sales

Don Bosco claimed that the motto Da mihi animas cetera tolle came from Francis de Sales, and we Salesians presume that this was the cherished phrase that the saintly Bishop of Geneva claimed for his own. And yet… was this really Francis de Sales. motto? On his own coat of arms as bishop we find a totally different phrase. That episcopal shield is, in all reality, the De Sales family crest, which Francis did not alter. He did, however, substitute the family motto – Nec Plus Nec Minus – with his own favorite phrase: Non Excidet. Francis had adopted this phrase at age 11 when he left Savoy for Paris to pursue his secondary education. The verb excidere is a strong one and was usually understood in the passive voice: to be razed, demolished, laid waste, destroyed. Constructed as a motto, the phrase Non Excidet is more akin to a prayer than a statement of bravado. As Elisabeth Stopp suggests, the young Francis was already feeling the pressure to live up to high expectations on the part of his father who was sending him to higher studies as the firstborn of a noble family. 

Don Bosco sosteneva che il motto Da mihi animas cetera tolle provenisse da Francesco di Sales, e noi Salesiani supponiamo che questa fosse la frase cara che il santo Vescovo di Ginevra ha rivendicato. E ancora… era davvero questo il motto di Francesco di Sales? Sul suo stesso stemma di vescovo troviamo una frase totalmente diversa. Quello scudo episcopale è, in realtà, lo stemma della famiglia De Sales, che Francesco non ha alterato. Egli ha fatto, tuttavia, sostituire il motto di famiglia – Nec Plus Nec Minus – con la sua frase preferita: Non Excidet. Francesco aveva adottato questa frase all’età di 11 anni quando lasciò la Savoia per Parigi per perseguire la sua educazione secondaria. Il verbo excidere è forte ed era generalmente inteso con voce passiva: essere raso al suolo, demolito, devastato, distrutto. Costruita come un motto, la frase Non Excidet è più simile a una preghiera che a una dichiarazione di spavalderia. Come suggerisce Elisabeth Stopp, il giovane Francesco sentiva già la pressione di essere all’altezza delle grandi aspettative da parte del padre che lo mandava a compiere studi superiori come primogenito di una nobile famiglia.
