On 6 February l922,Pius XI (1939) ascended the Papal throne: he would become known as a “Pope of the Missions” (as was his predecessor, Benedict XV). Two months later, on 24 April, Fr. Filippo Rinaldi ( 5 December 1931) was elected Rector Major: his ten years in office would be recalled for the great re-launching of the Salesian missionary movement. After a rapid glance at the “missionary policy” of the Papacy during the same period, we shall concentrate on that. Giovanni Bosco – Lettere di don Bosco. Ricorsi alla beneficenza pubblica.

Per le risorse finanziarie necessarie a sopperire ai costi sempre crescenti delle sue opere, don Bosco fece appello alla benevolenza delle istituzioni: la famiglia reale, le autorità di governo, gli amministratori pubblici (comunali, provinciali, statali…), le Opere benefiche esistenti sul territorio, la Banca Nazionale, le parrocchie, le diocesi, la Santa Sede stessa nelle persone dei suoi massimi esponenti, papa compreso. Per ogni richiesta di aiuto dava quelle ampie e precise ragioni benefiche e sociali, che a suo giudizio avrebbero dovuto far aprire i “cordoni della borsa” a chi ne possedeva una ben fornita e concedere quanto domandato alle autorità in termini di esenzioni, permessi, autorizzazioni, ecc.
