This article recounts the historical backdrop of the Salesian missionaries’ arrival in Miyazaki, Japan, in 1926, coinciding with the promulgation of Pope Pius XI’s encyclical “Rerum Ecclesiae.”
In recent years our Congregation of the Caritas Sisters of Miyazaki, especially the Province of Korea, experiences a fresh interest in the origins of our charism. The sisters talk about the primary importance of prayer and the secondary value of daily work.
The 12th General Chapter of the Caritas Sisters of Miyazaki (SCM) held in September 2004, had for its scope the clarification of the charismatic and spiritual identity of the Institute and the renewal of its life and form of government.
To write this paper, I used a great part of the materials gathered by the deceased Fr. Alfonso Crevacore in the “Cimatti Museum” of Tokyo (CMT), situated in the Salesian Seminary of Chofu. It deals specially with the mail correspondence. The originals are found according to the container, or in the Vatican Archives, or in the Central Salesian Archives of Rome (ASC) or in the archive of the China Province in Hong Kong or in the said Cimatti Museum. Fr. Mario Rassiga’s manuscript “Breve cenno storico dell’opera salesiana in Cina” (vol. II, chapter XCIX, pp. 125-136), which reported the correspondence between the Holy See and the Superiors in Turin before the foundation of the Salesian work in Japan. One should note that the actual Japanese Province, up to I January 1928, was part of the Visitatoria of China, of which the superior was Fr. Ignazio Canazei. The first nine Salesian missionaries arrived in Japan on 8 February 1926 under the leadership of Fr Vincenzo Cimatti. They were entrusted with the two provinces of Miyazaki and Oita, far away from the big cities, where they succeeded the missionaries of the Foreign Missions of Paris (MEP).
This study also aims to present the various congregations founded by some of the Salesian missionaries who worked in the East Asian region of the known Salesian world.
ln the year in which Pope Pius XI promulgated the encyclical Rerum Ecclesiae (1926),on 16 February 1926, the Salesian missionaries arrived in Miyazaki, Japan, center of their mission, and capital of the province in the Island of Kyushu.
The first article of the constitution of the FMA expresses this characteristic of the institute as follows:
“Through the gift of the Holy Spiril and the direct intervention of Mary, St. John Bosco Founded our Institute as a response of salvation to the profound hopes of young girls. He endowed it with a spiritual heritage that had its inspiration in the charity of Christ the Good Shepherd, and imparted to it a strong missionary impulse”. (Const.I ).
