The document that now reaches all confreres through this publication is subtitled “Post-Chapter reflection” and not “Chapter documents”, as has customarily been the case in the past. This is because the Chapter Assembly did not arrive at the point of final approval of the text by vote. Only a few Chapter deliberations, especially those of a legal nature, saw the light of day during the first four weeks of our work. The Acts of the GC27 are divided into three fundamental parts: the text which develops the theme “Witnesses to the radical approach of the Gospel”; the deliberations; the appendices. All these parts are important and contribute to an understanding of the Chapter event and of its spirit. Added to these are my presentation and the analytical index of the development of the theme. It should not be forgotten that these Acts find in the letter of convocation written by the Rector Major emeritus Fr pascual Chavez, some ideas which can help with a better interpretation of even the Chapter itself. The publication of the Acts, with the documents that form part of them, makes the decisions taken official policy, and marks the starting point of the six-year period 2008 – 2014.

The theme of the GC26 is a single one even though it is set out in key issues. At first sight it might seem that the GC26 dealt with five different questions; in realty it is just the one theme: Don Bosco’s programme of spiritual and apostolic life. The motto “Da mihi animas, cetera tolle” can be fully understood from a knowledge of the life and work of our beloved Father and Founder Don Bosco. I present to you the Acts of the GC23, with their rich contents for the guidance of our life and apostolic activity. In them is collected together the official documentation of the Chapter’s work: i.e. the document on educating young people to the faith; the modifications or additions concerning the Constitutions and Regulations; practical interpretations of some texts from the Rule; deliberations regarding the grouping of provinces; a practical directive for our presence in Africa; a brief chronicle of capitular events; and the “Letter to Youth” that the Assembly asked for from the Rector Major. Era mio desiderio di offerirvi insieme raccolte in un sol volume tutte le deliberazioni dei quattro nostri Capitoli Generali tenutisi da che la Pia nostra Società ebbe la suprema Pontificia approvazione. Ma richiedendo tale cosa non breve spazio di tempo ed abbastanza lungo lavoro, ho determinato di non lasciar terminare l’anno scolastico senza presentarvi le deliberazioni dei due ultimi Capitoli Generali, che non erano fino ad ora state pubblicate.

La publication des Actes, avec les documents qui en font partie, rend officielles les orientations prises et marque le point de départ de la période des six années 2008 – 2014.

Le thème du CG26 est unitaire, même s’il est articulé en pôles thématiques. A première vue, il peut sembler que le CG26 ait traité de cinq sujets différents; en réalité il s’agit d’un unique thème : Ie programme de vie spirituelle et apostolique de Don Bosco. La devise “Da mihi animas, caetera tolle” peut être pleinement comprise si I’on connaît la vie et l’œuvre de Don Bosco, notre Fondateur et Père bien-aimé.
