Thomas Anchukandam – “The relevance of history and salesian historiography- a philosophical approach” in “La storiografia salesiana tra studi e documentazione nella stagione postconciliare”

This paper, within the context of the seminar, focuses on the philosophy of history in terms of critical philosophy of history, dealing with issues like the nature of historical evidence and the theoretical aspects of historical scholarship.

History can be defined as an ongoing dialogue between the past and the present, with an eye on the future. This dialogue is facilitated through the interaction between historians and historical facts. History begins with the transmission of tradition, either through recorded or oral means, with the intention of preserving knowledge for future generations. In addition to asking why and how events occurred in the past, true historians also inquire about where history is heading, signaling progress towards the future and the underlying philosophy guiding this process.
