Michael Rua (1837-1910) was a pupil, then the lifetime collaborator and finally, the first successor of St. John Bosco as Rector Major of the Salesian Society (1888-1910). During his Rectorate the Salesians grew from 1030 members in 64 houses to 4420 confreres scattered across the globe. Don Rua’s letters to England offer the reader a glimpse of the character of their writer and of the pastoral care he took of a small group of relatively insignificant Salesians in what was very often the inhospitable atmosphere of the British empire at the height of its power.
Fr. Arthur J. Lenti tells the story of Don Bosco’ s efforts to mediate between the Holy See and the Italian government during the tense years of Italian unification. Of special importance was the appointment of bishops. After offering background on the historical events leading to the estrangement between the Church and state in Italy, the author goes to the sources in an effort to answer the question why someone so politically unimportant as Don Bosco, should become involved in a capacity of “negotiator.”

Le but de notre recherche est de retracer le processus de la fondation de l’école professionnelle officielle de Lubumbashi (Elisabethville) qui ouvrit ses portes en 1955.
La scuola dell’infanzia delle Figlie di Maria Ausiliatrice, una scuola salesiana al femminile, viene presentata nei metodi e nei contenuti dell’insegnamento, limitandosi all’Italia, dalle origini (1876) fino al 1914, quando il governo italiano ha imposto propri programmi a queste scuole.
Il prefetto nelle case salesiane, creazione originale di don Bosco, era vicario del Direttore e suo compito principale era di amministrare le cose temporali e di curare la disciplina degli alunni.
In questa sezione vengono offerti tre contributi che sono stati realizzati per la presentazione del volume “Don Michele Rua primo successore di don Bosco. Tratti di personalità, governo e opere (1888-1910)“.
L’autrice, nel presente contributo, ha evidenziato da un punto di vista sociologico il rapporto tra carisma e istituzione chiaramente emergente da molti contributi contenuti nel volume.
Nel secondo CG del 1880, presieduto da don Bosco, fu affidato al prefetto generale il compito di “mantenere cogli ispettori una corrispondenza mensuale”, con lo scopo di “essere informato e, a sua volta, informare il Rettor Maggiore dell’andamento delle sue ispettorie”.
