La fondazione della Società Salesiana risale al 18 dicembre dell’anno 1859: “Allo scopo e nell’intento di promuovere e conservare lo spirito di vera carità che richiedesi nell’opera degli Oratorii per la gioventù abbandonata e pericolante” i membri si associano “avendo di mira il vicendevole aiuto per la santificazione propria, si propongono di promuovere la gloria di Dio e la salute delle anime, specialmente delle più bisognose d’istruzione e di educazione” Il fondamento e la finalità della collaborazione tra salesiani e laici è la cura (dell’anima) del giovane.

Oltre i tre grandi Noviziati dell’alta Italia, se ne dovette fondare un altro in Sicilia. Vi sono Noviziati in Francia, in Ispagna, in Inghilterra e nelle varie Ispettorie dell’America, e quasi tutte queste Case sono ripiene di giovani ascritti animati da buona volontà e da ardente desiderio di diventare veri figli di Don Bosco. Assai edificante è il modo con cui alcuni superarono le gravi difficoltà che attraversavano il loro santo disegno.
